Sermon 23~~~Upon our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount~~~Discourse 3

“Blessed are the pure in heart: For they shall see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers: For they shall be called the children of God. “Blessed are
they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner
of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
“Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: For great is your reward in heaven: For so persecuted
they the Prophets which were before you.”

Matt. 5:8–12.

John Wesley lived the life that Jesus spoke of in the Sermon on the Mount. As he aimed to be ever more Christ like, it was to Matthew 5-7 that he first came.

It is the manifesto of the Christ; the rules for life which in actuality are not rules but an inner compulsion in the way we live. It is so difficult to describe how someone can stand strong in Christ whilst being tortured or beaten. How can we explain the way we seek peace, peace on earth, peace in community and between community, peace in families and peace within.

There is an excellent object lesson by Francis Chan on temptation that is great for describing purity of heart. The best example of how not to do it is David. One minute walking closely with God  – the next committing adultery and murder. But Jesus tells us that our hearts need to stay pure not just our hearts.

At a recent men’s conference, 25% of Christian men admitted to pornography watching of some description and not in the past but in the current. And how many people are Christian and going to see 50 shades of grey? We are in the midst of a tidal wave of immorality, so much so that the release of a BDSM movie is getting mainstream coverage. Many Christians will view it and their thinking will be skewed.

Wesley stood up and fought for social justice reform, just as Jesus did. Have we forgotten this aspect of our Christian walk? Have we forgotten that an erotic bestseller firstly can lead people on a tangent but more than that, continues the exploitation of women, men and children for the sexual gratification of others.
